Invisalign® is an orthodontic system that was developed to straighten teeth without the need for metal braces or similar designs that attach to the teeth. The system uses a sequential series of clear plastic trays called aligners to move teeth into their proper alignment over a period, typically between 12 and 18 months, but sometimes a little more. Because they're clear, they're almost impossible to detect while being worn, and the smooth plastic design eliminates the irritation issues that can occur with sharp wires and brackets. Plus, the aligners can be removed for eating, brushing and flossing, making it easier to care for teeth and gums during treatment.
Treatment will begin with impressions of your teeth which will be sent to the lab where the Invisalign® aligners will be custom-created just for you. The impressions will be scanned into a computer, and special software will be used to create a series of 3D models of your teeth, showing the progression of movements that will need to occur to bring your teeth into their correct alignment. The actual plastic aligners will be created using these models, so they fit perfectly in your mouth. Once your aligners are created, you'll wear each one for about two weeks, then swap it for the next aligner in the sequence.
Invisalign® effectively treats a wide variety of dental problems and is a comfortable and convenient option over traditional metal braces. Invisalign® can treat overbites, underbites, crossbites and spacing issues, like gaps between teeth or crowded teeth. To determine if Invisalign® is right for you, schedule an appointment so your teeth can be evaluated to determine if Invisalign® is a good choice or if another option might be better for your needs.
